Bra-tastic

October 1 marks the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was started in 1985 as a week long event and was kicked off by Betty Ford, a survivor herself. It was started to bring more awareness to the disease and to raise funds to aid in research and development of treatments and hopefully a cure.

As we get into raising awareness, let's touch on some other breastly issues too. (Is that even a word?) Oh yes, we will cover self breast exams, mammograms, prevention, treatment, ect., but let's also take some time to evaluate other breast related issues that may keep us from Thriving.

This post is mostly for the ladies. It is also for the gents who want to spread good news to their lady friends. Yup, going to talk about bras.

First up... sports bra. If you have any experience with bras, you know sizing is difficult. Even if you are an exact size, it may change as your hormones change throughout the month. All of a sudden, the fit is off. On top of those frustrations, trying to find a sportsbra with a good fit AND support feels impossible.

I'm sharing this because finding this bra changed my ability to work out and my confidence working out in public.  These people have no idea who I am or that I've bought 5 bras from them. FIVE. Prior to, I would double up, not run, only run when it was dark, not jump and just be super self conscious.

SheFit. Ultimate Sports Bra. (This is not my picture, it's from their site.)

The band is adjustable. The straps are adjustable. There are two hook & eyes under the front zipper.  You can run.  You can jump.  Some women report that this bra is great for pregnancy and breastfeeding! Does it sound like something you may need? You can check them out at www.shefit.com

Maybe you're not in search of a sports bra and just want some more bra info. In that case,  I'm going to direct you to The Bra Book, by Jené Luciani.

This book will give you tips on how to measure properly for a perfect fitting bra.  It will give fun facts and some history on how the bra came about. It's a fun read but also full of information.

Personally, I have not found an everyday bra that I can live without. I can tell you that a properly fitting bra does make a huge difference in comfort, support, how you look and how you feel.

But wait! There's more!

A properly fitted, supportive bra is actually good for your health! Especially regarding women with large breasts, having sufficient weight distribution can decrease chronic back pain. The Bra Book can teach you how to properly measure or you can go to a lingerie store or department in a well staffed department store and get your measurements. What ever reservation you have doing this, I assure you, it is worth it to get a properly fitting bra.

Happy shopping! Let me know how it goes!
